Pakistan is one of the countries with a highest prevalence of Child Labour in the world. ILO estimates in 1996 suggest that 3.17 million children in Pakistan are economically active. Of these, about 69% or 2.18 million are child labourers and about 58% of the child labourers are exposed to hazardous forms of child labour. Contrary to a decline of child labour in Latin American and some Asian countries during the last one decade, the situation in Pakistan has further deteriorated. The Labour Force Survey of Pakistan reflects that there has been an increase of about 1.4 million of the child labourers from year 2003-04 to 2006-07.

The National Commission for Child Welfare and Development (NCCWD) of Pakistan conducted a study in 2003 in six major cities of Pakistan about the domestic child labourers. The study findings reveal that about 93% respondents stated poverty as a single major reason for their entrance into child labour. 65% get a salary of Rs.500 to 1,500 per month (US$ 6.25 to 18.75) and in 51% cases the parents collect this money from the children. This ratio is higher for girls. About 60% boys and 40% girls get a holiday once or twice a month and 63% children get holidays on religious festivals like Eid etc. Only 6% of the respondents had ever attended formal or informal schools. However about 80% of the children showed their interest of resuming school education
